National Assembly Passes Bills to Strengthen Judiciary.

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly today passed ‘The Supreme Court Number of Judges (Amendment) Bill, 2024’. It was moved by Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar. Highlighting the salient features of the Bill, the Law Minister said under the Supreme Court Number of Judges Amendment Bill, the number of judges may be enhanced up to thirty-four. He said it is being done to address the issue of backlog of cases at the Apex Court.

According to Radio Pakistan, the House also passed ‘The Supreme Court Practice and Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2024’ and ‘The Islamabad High Court (Amendment) bill, 2024’. Under the Islamabad High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the Law Minister stated that the number of judges at the Islamabad High Court has been enhanced from nine to twelve.

Earlier, three bills were laid before the National Assembly today. These are ‘The Supreme Court Number of Judges (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, ‘Supreme Court Practice and Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, and ‘Islamabad High Court (Amendment) 2024’. These
bills were moved by Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar.

Other bills that were passed by the House include ‘The Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, ‘The Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, and ‘The Pakistan Navy (Amendment) Bill, 2024’. These were moved by Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also present in the House. The House has now been adjourned to meet again tomorrow (Tuesday) at eleven am.
