CJP calls for implementing laws, policies about population management

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Atta Bandial has called for implementation of laws and policies that promote population management in the country.

He was addressing concluding ceremony of two-day national conference titled “Resilient Pakistan: Calibrating Population and Resources” in Islamabad on Saturday.

The Chief Justice said we do have relevant laws and policies on important issues including fundamental rights but there is need to enforce them in letter and spirit. He said this is where the courts have to play their role.

Expressing pleasure over participation of a large number of women from different fields of life in the conference, the Chief Justice said empowered and educated women are inevitable for development of a society.

He said women’s right to life, health, education and decision making must be protected to strengthen them.

The two-day conference included several thematic sessions in which legal and human rights experts, academia and civil society representatives reviewed the progress made so far regarding population management in Pakistan and future course of action in this regard.

The discussions also spanned over important interlinked topics like women empowerment, enforcement of fundamental rights and international perspectives on population growth.
